CBD Frequently Asked Questions

What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol. It is one of the more than 400 chemical entities found in cannabis plants. CBD can be found in both marijuana and industrial HEMP. CBD is a close chemical compound to tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. In fact, THC and CBD have the exact same chemical makeup with the only difference being the arrangement of a single atom. Unlike THC, CBD does not have psychoactive properties, meaning it cannot get you “high”, no matter how much CBD is taken by an individual. CBD has become popular over the years as a health and wellness product and studies only continue to grow each year while more and more benefits are discovered with this amazing plant.

Does CBD Come from Marijuana or Hemp? And What’s the Difference Between the Two?

The defining difference between hemp and marijuana is their psychoactive component: tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. Hemp has 0.3% or less THC, meaning hemp-derived products don’t contain enough THC to create the “high” traditionally associated with marijuana. CBD is a compound found in cannabis.
There are other differences between the two plants, including their general uses. While marijuana is consumed recreationally or medicinally, hemp is used for a variety of things including textiles, nutrition, and more. In general, CBD products are derived from the hemp plant.

What’s the Difference Between CBD and THC?

CBD and THC are both cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. Though similar in structure and what they may help treat, the most important difference is that THC will cause a person to experience a “high” while CBD will not.
A basic explanation is as follows. THC interacts with the body by binding directly to CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system (ECS), primarily focusing on the former. It may overstimulate these receptors, triggering an intoxicating ‘high.’
Conversely, CBD does not bind to the receptors at all. Instead, CBD prevents the enzymes in the ECS from breaking down the body’s naturally occurring endocannabinoids. As a result, it promotes a healthy function of the ECS without any overstimulation. This is why CBD is non-intoxicating.

How Does CBD Work?

The human body has a vast network of receptors, called the Endocannabinoid System. The purpose of this system is to help our body stay balanced and in good overall health, even when external factors and certain lifestyle choices diminish our wellbeing. CBD and other cannabinoids fit into the receptors of the Endocannabinoid System, helping the body complete its efforts to keep us in good health by supporting many of the body’s physical processes.
CBD is generally well tolerated and considered safe. As with any other supplement, there is a chance that it could cause adverse reactions for some people, and/ or could interact with certain medications. As with any dietary supplement, consult your physician before use if you are pregnant, nursing, have or suspect a medical condition or are taking any medications.

I am from a state where it’s illegal to use medical marijuana. Can I still buy CBD oil?

In 2018, the federal government updated the Farm Bill, the agricultural act that governs farming in the United States. Part of the 2018 Farm Bill was the Hemp Farming Act, which removed hemp from the Controlled Substances Act, differentiating it from marijuana. Part of this Act stipulates that non-intoxicating cannabinoids from the hemp plant are also permitted on a federal level, meaning that CBD is no longer considered a controlled substance.
Nevertheless, each state can determine its own guidelines on this cannabinoid. Currently, almost all states allow CBD in some form, though there may be different specificities in each region. In general, CBD products that are derived from hemp and contain less than 0.3% THC are permitted.

Will I fail a drug test if I use CBD oil?

It depends on the testing standards of the lab administering your drug test. Most lab tests only search for THC, which is the main psychoactive component of the cannabis plant. Initial “point of care” drug tests can also confuse CBD for THC, resulting in a ‘false positive.’ If this happens to you, insist on more accurate confirmation testing. You can always contact a lab directly to verify exactly what will be tested.

Those of you who have an upcoming drug test may want to avoid full spectrum and broad-spectrum products and switch to CBD isolate temporarily. When in doubt, consult your physician first.

Will CBD Get Me High?

No. As mentioned above, CBD is non-intoxicating. You may have seen claims that it is non-psychoactive, but this isn’t technically true. Since it can influence the brain in some way, by allowing endocannabinoids to do their thing, it can have an impact on your mental state. As a result, it is ‘psychoactive.’ However, it is not intoxicating because it does not cause a high.
THC molecules, on the other hand, provoke an intoxicating high because they bind to the CB1 receptors in the brain. It is thought that CBD could subdue this process.

What’s the difference between hemp oil and CBD oil?

Full-spectrum hemp extract includes all the beneficial compounds the hemp plant has to offer, including phytocannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids and phytosterols. CBD is just one of hemp’s many phytocompounds.

How May I Know How Much CBD to Take?

As a baseline, our suggested dosage is 0.25mg CBD multiplied by your body weight in pounds on a daily basis. For example, a 120 pound person should take 30mg CBD daily (0.25 x 120 = 30), and a 200 pound person should take 50mg CBD daily (0.25x 200=50). There isn’t an exact measure as to how much intake of CBD an individual must take, these are recommendations, feel free to consult with your physician.

How Do I Know It’s Safe to Purchase CBD Online?

Third party laboratories produce CoAs to ensure that CBD products are safe and properly labeled. All reputable CBD companies provide batch-specific lab results, which you can find on the companies website. If the product you’re buying doesn’t come with a CoA, then it is not a reputable product.

Make sure you buy from a brand that sources hemp from the USA, uses a safe extraction method, and offers certificates of analysis (COAs) for its products. The COAs confirm the cannabinoid content, proving that the products contain less than 0.3% THC. Furthermore, they verify that there are no contaminants.
